CFA DMO Update – Management pull last minute stunt on draft agreement

08 May 2024

After finally reaching in-principle agreement on the new DMO Agreement, the parties commenced meetings in April to work on the draft agreement ahead of the formal ballot.

CFA provided a draft, which was supposed to reflect the agreed position of the parties in bargaining. So you can imagine our surprise when we noticed that CFA had deleted the following words from the Agreement:

"The Employer commits that there will be no involuntary redundancies between the commencement and nominal expiry date of the Agreement, regardless of any reform to the fire services"

This was never raised nor discussed in bargaining, and the unions both stated unequivocally that we do not agree to this deletion. Incredibly, CFA have since written to us claiming that they always intended to remove it, as it was only intended for the previous agreement.

We have since responded in writing to Torbjorn Servin, and made it abundantly clear that this clause cannot be deleted, and if CFA persist with this disingenuous bargaining strategy, we will withdraw in-principle agreement.

It is incredibly disappointing that it has come to this, and that CFA would try such an underhanded trick. We have notified Government and sought their intervention to resolve this issue. We will keep members updated of any progress.
