ASU Statement

We stand in solidarity with MPs calling for peace in Gaza

2 July 2024

The Australian Services Union NSW & ACT Services Branch stands in solidarity with all Members of Parliament who are using their voices to call for peace in Gaza.

The ASU was proud to play a leading role in successfully advocating for the inclusion of Palestine's recognition in the Australian Labor Party's platform. The ASU supports a two state solution, and it is beyond time for our Government, and the world, to recognise Palestine as a state.

We call on all Labor politicians to uphold the Labor platform and recognise Palestinian statehood as a priority in their voices and votes in our Parliament and in United Nations forums.

The Labor Party should be focused on doing everything in its power to stop Israel committing genocide in Gaza, rather than focusing on its own MPs who speak up for peace and recognition of Palestine in accordance with their own party platform.

We commend Senator Payman for supporting the Labor platform. We also recognise the actions and words of other Labor MPs who have used their positions to call for peace and support for the Palestine in accordance with the Labor platform – a platform that was developed by thousands of party and union members committed to peace and justice for the Palestinian people.

All MPs across the Parliament should work together to support immediate ceasefire, release of all hostages, stop genocide, establish a lasting peace and two state solution, and recognition of Palestine.

We pay tribute to the ASU members who have called, emailed, posted on social media and rallied, calling on our Government to speak up on behalf of the Palestinian people and for peace in Gaza. We will continue to encourage our members to call on their MPs and support community actions calling for peace.
