Greater Shepparton City Council OHS Issue at Visitor Centre

12 July 2024

ASU Organiser Brittany Mitchell recently met with Council to address concerns raised by members and delegates following several serious incidents of occupational violence and aggression at the GSCC Visitor Centre.

As a result of these discussions, Council has committed to several improved safety measures, including enhancing security with a consult room door lock, proposing a gift shop mirror for visibility, requesting CCTV access for monitoring, and considering a consult room duress alarm with improved processes.

Members have emphasised that while these improvements are positive steps, having a minimum of two staff members present is essential to reduce risks to employee safety.

Council has asserted that safety in numbers is not a factor. We strongly disagree. Maintaining a safe and supportive work environment depends on ensuring two staff members are always on-site to minimize risks.

The ASU has formally requested the council conduct a comprehensive risk assessment. We will continue working closely with members at the Visitor Centre to ensure that Council fulfills its obligations under the OHS Act.
